How EZDriveMA Works

EZDriveMA is the Massachusetts all electronic tolling program that operates without toll booths, barriers or gates. This allows travel through tolling locations at posted highway speeds.

Tolling locations consists of gantries mounted over the roadway with equipment that reads the E-ZPass transponders and cameras to capture images of the vehicle’s license plate.

As you travel under a gantry:

  • If your E-ZPass account is in good standing and your transponder is properly mounted, the toll is deducted from your E-ZPass pre-paid account.
  • If your Registered Pay By Plate MA account is in good standing, an image of your license plate is taken and the toll is charged to your account.
  • If you do not have an E-ZPass or a Registered Pay By Plate MA account, an image of your license plate is taken and the registered owner of the vehicle is mailed a Pay By Plate MA invoice.

Your toll trip is calculated by the EZDriveMA system based on the gantries you traveled under on the following MassDOT roadways:

  • Massachusetts Turnpike (I-90)
  • Sumner Tunnel
  • Callahan Tunnel
  • Ted Williams Tunnel
  • Tobin Memorial Bridge
